The Man Behind the Hot Dog: Daniel Contreras

The story of El Güero Canelo is closely tied to its founder, Daniel Contreras. Contreras, who popularized the Sonoran hot dog in Tucson, is now expressing his gratitude to the city for its support. In March, a video shared by the Contreras family showed Daniel Contreras in physical therapy, where he exclaimed, "I'm a miracle, miracle, miracle."

After a 6-foot fall in his driveway resulted in eight broken ribs and a broken clavicle, Contreras faced life-threatening lung complications. He spent 34 days battling the issue with his wife and three kids by his side. Contreras credits the doctors and staff for saving his life.

For most of his hospital stay, he was unaware of the outpouring of support from the Tucson community. Contreras tells that the prayers from his friends and loyal customers were answered. "Thank you Tucson," Contreras says. "God is trying to tell me, 'hey, you better just take it easy man'."

Contreras is 63 and now has a plan for retirement. He says wants to oversee the construction of a new building at his third location on South 12th Avenue. By December, he will hand over the three restaurants to his kids, who have already stepped in to help the last few months. "I don't have to be in the front of stage anymore. They can run the business," he tells.

Recognition and Accolades

El Güero Canelo has received significant recognition for its contributions to the culinary landscape. In 2018, El Guero Canelo won a James Beard Award with Sonoran hot dogs.

In 2010, El Guero Canelo appeared on the Travel Channel show Food Wars, competing against rival BK Carne Asada and Hot Dogs in a blindfolded taste test.
