Melvin Miller: The Rise of a Top Wrestling Recruit

Nebraska wrestling is among the top nine schools for the No. 1 overall recruit in the class of 2027, Melvin Miller. Miller wrestles for powerhouse Bishop McCort High School in Pennsylvania. The school also housed Miller's brother, Bo Bassett (Iowa), and teammate Jax Forrest (Oklahoma State).

Just about every school was pursuing Bassett and Miller with Nebraska being the most serious challenger for both. Bassett was also committed to Iowa at one point in this recruiting cycle.

Recruiting Impact and Future Potential

It's no surprise to see Nebraska have success on the recruiting trail as the Huskers are coming off the most successful seasons in program history. Miller hails from Bishop McCort High School in Pennsylvania, where he is high school teammates with Jax Forrest, the crown jewel in Taylor’s 2026 recruiting class.

Thus far Taylor has almost solely gone big-game hunting in recruiting as the Cowboys’ coach. He has four (Forrest, Dreshaun Ross, Jordyn Raney and Jayden Raney) of Flo’s top six wrestlers committed in OSU’s 2026 class.

Virginia Tech Wrestling has landed lots of big-time recruits under Tony Robie including Jimmy Mullen and TJ Stewart among the most recent five-star level talents. Bo Bassett, considered a top 2 overall wrestler in the 2026 class, and Melvin Miller, the #1 overall recruit in the 2027 class, have both committed to Virginia Tech.

Bassett’s commitment is massive and gives the Hokies an obvious heir to 2024 national champion Caleb Henson at 149. Miller will also be an instant starter in the middleweights who has all the makings to become a future national champion. Landing both of these guys is massive and will elevate VT further into potentially the strongest challenger to Penn State’s reign of dominance over collegiate wrestling.
