Michael Robert McDonald, born on January 15, 1991, is a retired American mixed martial artist who left a significant mark on the sport. McDonald competed in the Bantamweight division of the UFC, where he challenged for the interim UFC Bantamweight Championship at 22 years of age. His journey in mixed martial arts began early, showcasing his dedication and talent from a young age.
McDonald started training in kickboxing at the age of ten, turned to mixed martial arts at 13, started his amateur career at 14, and turned professional at 16 in 2007. He also has two brothers who had professional careers in mixed martial arts. He trains at Oakdale Mixed Martial Arts with the Last Stand Fight Team. McDonald graduated in 2009 from Grace M.
McDonald began his professional MMA career in 2007 at the age of 16, quickly rising through regional promotions in California with a series of finishes that showcased his prodigious talent.

UFC Interim Bantamweight Championship
McDonald faced the UFC Interim Bantamweight Champion Renan Barão on February 16, 2013, at UFC on Fuel TV: Barão vs. McDonald. McDonald's momentum peaked in 2013 when he earned a UFC interim bantamweight title shot against Renan Barão at UFC on Fuel TV: Barão vs. McDonald, though he suffered a fourth-round submission loss that halted his undefeated streak in the promotion.
On February 16, 2013, at UFC on Fuel TV 7, McDonald challenged Renan Barão for the UFC Interim Bantamweight Championship but fell short, submitting to an arm-triangle choke in the fourth round at 3:57. McDonald was competitive with capable take-down defense and crisp boxing - particularly in the first two rounds - but ultimately succumbed to Barão's more diverse skillset as he mixed in knees and kicks standing together with take-downs. Despite the loss, the fight demonstrated his resilience, as he absorbed significant damage before the finish.
McDonald rebounded quickly, submitting Brad Pickett with a triangle choke in the second round on August 17, 2013, at UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen. However, his momentum stalled later that year when he lost to Urijah Faber via guillotine choke submission in the second round on December 14, 2013, at UFC on Fox: Johnson vs.
A prolonged layoff followed due to recurring hand and wrist injuries sustained from repetitive striking, which required multiple surgeries and sidelined him for over two years. McDonald returned on January 2, 2016, at UFC 195, defeating Masanori Kanehara via rear-naked choke submission in the second round. His comeback was short-lived, however, as he suffered a first-round knockout loss to John Lineker via punches on July 13, 2016, at UFC Fight Night: McDonald vs. Injuries, including hand and wrist issues, plagued McDonald in subsequent years, leading to a 1-1 record in his remaining UFC fights before his release from the organization in 2017.
McDonald earned multiple UFC performance bonuses, including Fight of the Night awards for his unanimous decision victory over Edwin Figueroa at UFC Fight Night 24 on March 26, 2011, and for his second-round submission victory against Brad Pickett at UFC Fight Night 26 on August 17, 2013 (also earning Submission of the Night).

McDonald next faced former Bellator Bantamweight Champion Eduardo Dantas on July 13, 2018, at Bellator 202. He won the fight via knockout in the first round. McDonald suffered another badly broken hand in the bout, leaving McDonald questioning whether his career could continue. The metacarpal bone in his left hand was shattered and crushed resulting in McDonald's fifth hand surgery.
Following his retirement from professional mixed martial arts in 2018, Michael McDonald transitioned his longstanding interest in woodworking into a full-time career, expanding Mayday's Custom Woodworks, which he had founded in 2012 while still competing. The business, based in Turlock, California near his hometown of Oakdale, specializes in high-end custom cabinetry, kitchen and bath renovations, and bespoke furniture projects for clients in California's Central Valley and Bay Area.
In his personal life, McDonald has resided in the Oakdale area, maintaining strong ties to the local community where he grew up and trained. He married Rachel Esteller in late 2014, and the couple welcomed a daughter, Holly, with the family relocating within the region to Long Barn in early 2025 for a more rural lifestyle. McDonald remained involved in the MMA community after 2018, primarily through affiliation with Oakdale Mixed Martial Arts Academy, where he had trained throughout his career and occasionally instructed classes prior to retiring. In interviews reflecting on his MMA legacy, McDonald has portrayed his career as fulfilling and purposeful, crediting it with building resilience and discipline that now inform his family and business pursuits, while expressing gratitude for the opportunities without interest in returning to competition.
