About The Jiujitsu Project
The Jiujitsu Project is headquartered in Tarpon Springs, Florida, and is a special place where kids and adults can come and learn this beautiful but powerful sport. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is both a self-defense martial art as well as a fun game where people can grow in body, mind, and spirit. The academy is one of the very few nonprofit Jiu-Jitsu schools in the country, committed to providing Jiu-Jitsu to the community regardless of financial means. It is an inclusive gym that allows people of all walks of life to participate on the mats.
Originally started as New Port Richey Jiujitsu, the idea of something bigger to help foster jiujitsu in the community kept coming up. The Jiujitsu Project became the embodiment of this thought. The nonprofit corporation started offering classes to the community. The academy has been working with the Tarpon Springs Rotary and Chamber of Commerce and have been teaching at the Boys & Girls Club of Tarpon Springs since the summer of 2023.

Overcoming Obstacles
Like any worthwhile endeavor, The Jiujitsu Project has faced its share of challenges. These obstacles have presented opportunities for growth. From challenging landlords to quick location moves and partners backing out, each hurdle has ultimately made the academy stronger. The loss of close students is hard but again, in the end things worked out and the academy grew stronger.

The Impact of Jiu-Jitsu
Nearly all aspects of training in Jiujitsu have positive impacts on people. Practice in jiujitsu isn't limited by a person's race, belief system, or sexual orientation. There are people with physical impairments and handicaps who practice. There are ESE kids and people on the autism spectrum who can have a wonderful time training jiujitsu. People of all ages practice, from 2-3-year-old toddlers to individuals in their 80s.
Incredible, life-changing personal growth can come from training Jiu-Jitsu. For over 21 years, Michael Geery has seen adults and children from all walks of life improve themselves once they began Jiu-Jitsu.
Jiu-Jitsu for Women and Veterans:
- Women: One in four women are sexually assaulted in the United States, but training Jiu-Jitsu can help women heal from the trauma of these horrific events.
- Veterans: Many veterans express that their PTSD symptoms are helped by Jiu-Jitsu. It helps them foster relationships and connectedness, which have often been absent from their lives.
Are you looking to build self-confidence? Are you looking to lose weight and get fit? Are you looking to learn the very best self-defense to protect yourself?
