Triumph Over Abdullaev
Muratalla won the vacant interim IBF world lightweight title, defeating Zaur Abdullaev by unanimous decision on Saturday, May 10, at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego. Scores were 119-109, 119-109 and 118-110.
Muratalla landed the more-effective punches during the fight, which was mostly tactical from the opening bell. Muratalla varied his offense, throwing and landing lead or counter right hands to the head of Abdullaev. Abdullaev was able to finally get going in the fifth round, connecting with a series of combinations to the head of Muratalla, who swung momentum his way in rounds six and seven, connecting with uppercuts to the head and finishing combinations with left hooks to the body. Muratalla worked behind a consistent jab throughout much of the second half of the fight.

The IBF world title is held by Camarillo resident Vasiliy Lomachenko, who, according by the bylaws of the IBF, must next defend the world title against Muratalla. Failure to do so could result in the IBF stripping Lomachenko and elevating Muratalla to full world titleholder. Lomachenko won the vacant IBF title one year ago, stopping George Kambosos Jr. in the 11th round in Perth, Australia.
