The Rockers: A High-Flying History of a Groundbreaking Tag Team

The Rockers, originally known as the Midnight Rockers, were an American professional wrestling tag team consisting of Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty. They teamed from 1985 to 1992, leaving a lasting impact on the world of professional wrestling.

The Rockers tag team consisted of two core members: Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty, whose complementary styles and backgrounds laid the foundation for their partnership.

Shawn Michaels, born Michael Shawn Hickenbottom on July 22, 1965, in Chandler, Arizona, began his wrestling journey after training under the guidance of veteran José Lothario in the early 1980s.

Marty Jannetty, born Frederick Martin Jannetty on February 3, 1960, in Columbus, Georgia, entered professional wrestling in 1983 after training with Jerry Oates.

Early Years and Formation

Marty Jannetty and Shawn Michaels first met and struck up a friendship when they both competed for the National Wrestling Alliance's Central States Wrestling territory in Kansas City in 1985.

Initially they would only travel together (along with Dave "D.J." Peterson) since Jannetty was either teaming with Tommy Rogers (better known as Tommy Lane of the Rock 'n' Roll RPMs) as the Uptown Boys, or he was teaming with Central States booker ”Bulldog” Bob Brown.

After the team of Jannetty and Brown broke up Michaels and Jannetty started teaming up, although they were not given a team name.

The Midnight Rockers tag team was formed in 1985 when Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty, leveraging their prior individual wrestling experience, began collaborating in the Kansas City regional wrestling scene.

The team's name, Midnight Rockers, evoked a rebellious, high-energy persona suited to their dynamic style, and they quickly rose to prominence.

NWA Central States Wrestling

The Midnight Rockers, the tag team of Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty, launched their partnership in NWA Central States Wrestling in 1985, a prominent NWA territory based in Kansas City that emphasized athletic, fast-paced competition across the Midwest.

As newcomers to the tag division, they competed in several bouts against established regional talent, honing their synchronized high-flying maneuvers and aerial assaults that set them apart from the more power-based teams of the era.

These early matches helped cultivate a growing fanbase among local audiences, who appreciated the duo's energetic performances and innovative teamwork in venues throughout Kansas City and nearby towns like Wichita and St.

Their breakthrough came on May 15, 1986, when the Midnight Rockers defeated the reigning champions, the Batten Twins (Bart and Brad Batten), to capture the NWA Central States Tag Team Championship in Kansas City, Kansas.

On May 15, 1985 Michaels and Jannetty defeated The Batten Twins (Brad & Bart) to win the NWA Central States Tag Team Championship.

The championship reign proved short-lived, lasting only seven days until the Batten Twins reclaimed the belts on May 22, 1986, in the same city.

Their first title reign was short-lived as the Batten Twins regained the title only a week later on May 22, 1985.

Despite the brevity, the Rockers used the opportunity to showcase key defenses against local antagonists, delivering athletic displays that reinforced their reputation for exciting, edge-of-your-seat wrestling in the territory's heartland.

Early booking decisions in the regional circuits were shaped by local promoters, including those in Kansas City, who positioned the duo in undercard matches to showcase their innovative approach and build audience interest.

American Wrestling Association (AWA)

The Midnight Rockers, consisting of Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty, joined the American Wrestling Association (AWA) in early 1986, transitioning from their regional roots in NWA Central States Wrestling where they had honed a high-flying, fast-paced style that contrasted with the promotion's more traditional approach.

Under promoter Verne Gagne, the duo quickly established themselves as dynamic challengers, drawing larger crowds with their athletic maneuvers and engaging personas.

After wrestling on the lower end of the card to get the fans familiar with the team the Midnight Rockers soon moved onto a feud with the team of Doug Somers and Buddy Rose who at the time were one of the top teams in the promotion.

Their initial outing with Somers and Rose at the WrestleRock stadium show on April 20, 1986 did not go well for Jannetty and Michaels who lost in front of 22,000 fans.

When Somers and Rose beat Scott Hall and Curt Hennig for the AWA World Tag Team Championship the Midnight Rockers suddenly found themselves chasing the main tag team title of the promotion.

The Midnight Rockers teamed up with Curt Hennig to defeat Somer, Rose and Alexis Smirnoff at ”Battle by the Bay” on June 28, 1986 to prove that they were indeed capable of beating the champions.

The Midnight Rockers would repeatedly challenge Somers throughout the rest of 1986 but never quite be able to get the win when the title was on the line.

Finally near the end of that year, Jannetty and Michaels defeated the champions in a ”non-title” Steel cage match on December 25, 1986 on the AWA's ”Brawl in St. Paul” show.

This rivalry featured intense matches throughout 1986, including a notable steel cage bout on December 25, 1986, in St. Paul, Minnesota, where the Rockers emerged victorious, building momentum toward a title opportunity.

On January 27, 1987, in St. Paul, Minnesota, they defeated the team of "Playboy" Buddy Rose and "Pretty Boy" Doug Somers at the St. Paul Civic Center to capture the AWA World Tag Team Championship for the first time.

A month later on January 27, 1987, at the Met Center, in Bloomington, MN, the Midnight Rockers defeated Rose and Somers for the AWA Tag Team title.

After losing the titles, the Midnight Rockers continued performing in the AWA and on the independent circuit before returning to prominence in late 1987.

On December 27, 1987, in Las Vegas, Nevada, they defeated the Original Midnight Express (Dennis Condrey and Randy Rose) to win the AWA World Tag Team Championship for a second time.

Their third and final AWA World Tag Team Championship reign came on February 22, 1988, when they defeated the Rock 'n' Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson) in Memphis, Tennessee.

Upon verification, the third is the win over Rock n Roll, but lost the next day or so.

For precision: the reign was brief, lasting until March 1988?

According to wrestling-titles, third reign Feb 22, 1988 Memphis d. Rock n Roll, then lost March 18, 1988 to Badd Company?

In addition to the World titles, the Midnight Rockers captured the AWA Southern Tag Team Championship twice in late 1987.

Continental Wrestling Association (CWA)

A key stop was the Continental Wrestling Association (CWA) in Memphis, Tennessee, where the Midnight Rockers integrated into the promotion's tag team landscape starting in late 1987.

On November 22, 1987, they defeated the Rock 'n' Roll RPMs (Mike Davis and Tommy Lane) to win the AWA Southern Tag Team Championship, a regional title defended within the CWA circuit.

During their approximately 35-day reign, they defended the belts in matches against local competitors.

These appearances emphasized the team's cocky heel persona, with promos and brawls that drew crowds but did not elevate them to major national contention, focusing instead on honing their act amid the promotion's fast-paced Southern style.

Throughout these independent tours, the Midnight Rockers engaged in notable matches against agile teams like the Rock 'n' Roll RPMs, prioritizing athletic displays and crowd engagement to solidify their reputation as innovative performers.

World Wrestling Federation (WWF)

Jannetty and Michaels realized that the AWA was a promotion in decline, in fact it would shut down completely by 1990, and they decided that their best bet was to work for the WWF.

The Midnight Rockers got an offer from Vince McMahon while holding the AWA Tag Title.

The team made their first WWF appearance in 1987 only five days after dropping the AWA Tag Team titles at a house show in St. Paul, Minnesota where they challenged the then WWF World Tag Team Champions The Hart Foundation for a title match.

Four days later the Midnight Rockers wrestled at their first TV taping for the show WWF Wrestling Challenge defeating the team of Jose Estrada, Sr.

After being fired by the WWF, they went down to Continental Wrestling around Alabama and Pensacola, Florida.

According to the Heartbreak and Triumph DVD, Michaels was unhappy there.

After the way they had left the AWA Michaels and Jannetty could not just return like nothing had happened, instead the Midnight Rockers started working for the AWA affiliated Championship Wrestling Association (CWA) in Memphis, Tennessee.

The team had made a couple of appearances in the CWA in the past as part of their working agreement with the AWA but now they were in Memphis full-time.

Shortly after arriving in the territory, Michaels and Janetty turned heel signing with manager Mark Guleen.

Their first feud in Memphis was against a recently formed team known as The Nasty Boys (Jerry Sags and Brian Knobs) whom they faced in several brutal matches all over the CWA territory.
