UFC 308 delivered an unforgettable main event as Ilia Topuria faced off against Max Holloway for the featherweight title. The fight, which took place at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, was a clash of generations and styles, with Topuria's explosive power meeting Holloway's technical precision and relentless pace. Let's dissect the fight round by round to understand how Topuria secured his victory.
Round 1: Holloway's Activity vs. Topuria's Investment
Early in the first round, Holloway invested in body shots with jabs, straights, and front kicks, aiming to gauge Topuria's reactions. Topuria, however, remained patient, waiting for opportunities to strike when Holloway was either against the cage or within close range. Holloway continued to land his jab effectively. Topuria focused on kicking Holloway's lead leg, a strategic investment for later in the fight. Holloway's constant activity and varied attacks made it difficult for Topuria to find his timing. Despite a late slip from Holloway, he maintained control and secured a solid first round. Holloway did well with his jab and constant attacks that I give him the round, but you could see that even though Topuria hasn’t found his range yet, his leg kicks are working and will be a good investment.
Score: 10-9 Holloway
Round 2: Topuria Finds His Range
In the second round, Topuria began to implement pull counters and increased his leg kicks, which visibly started to damage Holloway. Topuria’s strikes are starting to land, which makes Holloway vulnerable. Holloway landed well with about a minute and a half left in the round, but Topuria kept up his leg kicks and body jabs, which were landing consistently. This round was much better for Topuria as he started to find his range, and his leg kicks were a big weapon in this fight. Holloway was still in the fight and clearly affecting Topuria.
Score: 10-9 Topuria

Round 3: The Decisive Finish
The third round saw both fighters exchanging hooks to the body. Holloway incorporated oblique kicks more frequently, eliciting reactions from Topuria. Topuria landed a massive straight by fainting with the jab and hook, which left Holloway open down the middle, and he got cracked. Holloway is now against the cage, and Topuria is going for the finish and starts to land beautifully to the body. Holloway was able to just about survive and move away from the cage, but Topuria kept up the pressure and timed such a fantastic left hook with Holloway’s guard down, and that drops him, and Topuria just viciously hammer fists his way to a stoppage win.
Final Result: Ilia Topuria by KO at 1:34 of Round 3. The MMA Gods strike once again with a soul punishing reality as the undroppable, never to be KO’d has been put down by the leading hand of the new generation, Ilia Topuria.

The fight showcased a classic matchup of styles, with Topuria's power and precision ultimately overwhelming Holloway's volume and experience.
Fighter Analysis and Future Prospects
Ilia Topuria is a star. He has everything you need to be successful, and I believe he will become the biggest star we see since McGregor. Not only is he marketable, but he fights at such a high level and still gets fantastic finishes that not many have been able to do. Having back-to-back victories of Volkanovski and Holloway may be the best we have ever seen in MMA. I don’t know what’s next for Topuria, but I don’t see anyone beating him anytime soon unless he goes up to lightweight, which I would hope he doesn’t and at least has a few title defences before doing that. Holloway was still very much in this fight and can still go. I’d say he should move to 155 as I don’t think there’s anything left to do at 145 and I’d say he has a better chance to fight for the title at 155 then he does at 145.
With the new generation of fighters blossoming, the likes of Diego Lopes, Movsar Evloev, Lerone Murphy pale in comparison to the dominant champ as we now beckon the question of who is going to take Topuria’s 0? Skies the limit as the new wave of talent makes up for a variety of fun fights against the reigning champ. Styles make fights, the question is, who’s style can pose the most problems for the champ and will it work?
