The Royal Rumble: History, Rules, and Road to WrestleMania

For many years, the Road to WrestleMania has begun with the Royal Rumble Match, a 30-man over-the-top rope war where the winner earns an opportunity to face a World Champion on the grandest stage of them all. The Royal Rumble is considered to be one of WWE’s “Big Four” events and the first stop on the road to WrestleMania. The winner receives a championship opportunity at "The Showcase of the Immortals." The Royal Rumble is a professional wrestling pay-per-view event, typically produced every January by professional wrestling promotion World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). The event was created in 1988 with the inaugural event held on January 24, 1988 at the Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario.

The Royal Rumble match was created by wrestler and WWE Hall of Famer Pat Patterson and the event was established by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE). The first Royal Rumble match was won by Jim Duggan. After the inaugural 1988 event aired as a television special on the USA Network, the Royal Rumble has been broadcast via pay-per-view since the 1989 event and livestreaming since the 2015 event.

The event is traditionally held in late January, but in 2025, it was held in early February. The Royal Rumble match is generally held as the main event of the annual event. There are some exceptions, such as the 1988, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2006, 2013, and 2023 events. In 1988, the main event was a tag team match, while for all the others, it was a men's world championship match. While originally only for men, a women's version of the Royal Rumble match was held as the main event at the 2018 event, which was also the first event to have two Rumble matches on one card. It subsequently became standard to have both a men's and women's Royal Rumble match at the annual event.

Due to the Royal Rumble matches taking up a large amount of time (most Rumble matches last roughly one hour), the Royal Rumble event tends to have a smaller card than most other pay-per-view events. The men's Royal Rumble match is usually the main event. The 2018 Royal Rumble was the first to include a women's Royal Rumble match, which was the main event for that year.

What is the Royal Rumble Match?

The Royal Rumble match is based on the classic battle royal, in which a number of wrestlers (traditionally 30) aim at eliminating their competitors by tossing them over the top rope, with both feet touching the floor. The pay-per-view is a part of WWE's "Big Four", along with WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Survivor Series. The difference between a Royal Rumble and a standard battle royal is that in a standard battle royal, all participants start the match in the ring at the same time, where in a Royal Rumble match, two participants start and then the rest enter at timed intervals. The winner of the match is the last wrestler remaining after all others have been eliminated.

To enter the Royal Rumble match, 30 wrestlers are assigned a spot in the match at random. The first two participants kick things off, and after 90 seconds or two minutes (it can vary by year), another wrestler comes out. That continues until all competitors have entered the match. There are no pinfalls, DQs, or submissions. To eliminate an opponent, you must toss them over the top rope and both their feet must touch the floor. The only way to win is by being the last person in the ring by the night's end.

The first Royal Rumble took place on January 24, 1988 in Hamilton, Ontario. Jim Duggan won, and the first pay-per-view Rumble occurred a year later. The Royal Rumble is two separate matches comprised of 30 men and 30 women; beginning with two participants in the ring, and at regular timed intervals (usually, but not always, every 90 seconds), one of the remaining 28 participants enters the ring.

Rules of the Royal Rumble

What exactly are the rules of the Royal Rumble match? The Royal Rumble features 30 of only the elite Superstars of WWE from Raw, SmackDown and ECW. Two Superstars drawn at random start the match. New Superstars enter the Rumble every 90 seconds. The last man standing in the ring is the winner and gets an opportunity at a World Champion in the main event at WrestleMania. The object of the Royal Rumble Match is to throw your opponent over the top rope. Both feet must touch the floor for their elimination to be official. The winner of the event is the last wrestler remaining after all others have been eliminated.A participant is eliminated when leaving the ring over the top rope, and then having both feet touch the floor (although this latter specification was not specified until the 1995 Royal Rumble, where the "both feet" stipulation played a crucial role in the final moments of the match).

Going out between the second and third rope or under the bottom rope is not a valid elimination. An elimination can also occur when a participant is thrown off the top rope by a non-competing opponent, or by one who had already been eliminated, or when the participant deliberately jumps over the top rope, outside the ring. In other words, if a wrestler goes over the top rope, regardless how it happened, that wrestler is out.

Why must both feet touch the floor in the Royal Rumble match? To determine the winner of the Royal Rumble match, it has to be definitive. That includes how a wrestler gets eliminated. The 1995 Royal Rumble saw Shawn Michaels and The British Bulldog as the final two participants in the match. Davey Boy Smith appeared to have eliminated Michaels, but only one of his feet touched the floor. Michaels got back into the ring and eliminated Smith to win the match. It was an unofficial rule at the time that had fans confused. Michaels’ efforts were used as an official rule that must be followed. It changed the match forever.

Since then, several stars have followed Michaels’ lead. Kofi Kingston, John Morrison, Naomi, and Katana Chance are just a few names who have found creative ways to remain in the Royal Rumble match, from doing handstands, laying on their backs, or using chairs.
