Emma Grimes Revolutionizes High School Women's Wrestling: Shocking National Rankings Revealed!

The landscape of high school women's wrestling is constantly evolving, with athletes across the nation making their mark. USA Wrestling, FloWrestling, and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum jointly publish national rankings for high school girls wrestlers, providing a comprehensive assessment of talent across the United States.

These rankings, which evaluate girls in grades 8-12 from all 50 states, are significantly influenced by major USA Wrestling events such as the Women’s Nationals in Spokane, Wash., and the National Girls High School Recruiting Showcase in Las Vegas, Nev. Additionally, all of USA Wrestling’s Regional competitions, as well as various national and state-level events, are taken into consideration.

With the Women’s Nationals serving as a World Team Trials event at the U15, U17, U20, and U23 levels, many athletes adjust their weight classes to compete for a spot on Team USA. This dynamic impacts the rankings and creates opportunities for new contenders to emerge.

Notably, the committee has reintroduced the 95-pound weight class to accommodate post-season competition, a division not always included in state high school seasons. Madison Healey of Pennsylvania holds the No. 1 ranking at 95 pounds.

Top Ranked Wrestlers and Pound-For-Pound Standings

Several athletes have maintained their No. 1 ranking while transitioning to different weight classes. Jaclyn Bouzakis of Pennsylvania is ranked No. 1 at 100 pounds, Morgan Turner of Illinois at 105 pounds, and Everest Leydecker of Arizona at 120 pounds. Other new No. 1 athletes include Heather Crull of Indiana (110), Emma Bacon of Pennsylvania (125), Daniella Nugent of Massachusetts (140) and Tilisa Matakaiongo of Utah (235).

Athletes who have remained at No. 1 in the same weight class include Epenesa Elison of California (115), Aubre Krazer of Pennsylvania (130), Taina Fernandez of Maryland (135), Violette Lasure of Pennsylvania (145), Piper Fowler of Tennessee (170) and Brooke Huffman of Wisconsin (190).

The Pound-For-Pound (P-4-P) rankings have seen significant shifts, including the emergence of a new No. 1, U20 World Team member Everest Leydecker from Phoenix, Arizona.

The top five of the Pound-For-Pound rankings are Leydecker, Taina Fernandez, Jaclyn Bouzakis, Heather Crull, and Piper Fowler. Abbi Cooper of California, Daniella Nugent of Massachusetts, Tilisa Matakaiongo of Utah, Cassandra Gonzales of Minnesota, Taylor Whiting of Wisconsin, and Harlee Hiller of Illinois have all moved into the top 25 in the P-4-P rankings.

The final ranking for the year will be released in early July, prior to the USMC Junior and 16U Nationals in Fargo, N.D. This ranking will incorporate assessments from USA Wrestling’s Women’s National Duals in Westfield, Ind., held in June, as well as other major national-level competitions organized by various wrestling organizations.

Coaches, parents, and athletes are encouraged to submit information about specific athletes and their achievements throughout the year for the committee’s consideration. The quality of these rankings continues to improve with the sharing of updated information.
