Famous French UFC Fighters: A Legacy of Combat Sports Excellence

Since MMA was finally legalized in France a few years ago, the combat sport has been taking off within the country. Despite the country’s all-out ban of the sport, France has produced some note-worthy fighters since the dawn of MMA. As the major MMA promotions look to hone in on one of Europe’s last MMA frontiers, this has led to some highly anticipated events. Here’s a list of the best MMA fighters from France presented by sports betting platform solutions.

This Saturday marks the third time UFC touches down in France. After legalizing mixed martial arts in 2020, the world’s premier fighting promotion will make its debut on French soil for the very first time as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) touches down in Paris on September 3, 2022. The card also features a number of other French fighters as the promotion attempts to dive into a new market headfirst.

Here, we spotlight some of the most famous French UFC fighters who have made significant impacts on the sport.

Early Pioneers and Boxing Legends

Georges Carpentier
Georges Carpentier, early french boxing legend

Going to go out on a limb here and say that nobody reading this was alive during Georges Carpentier’s career, but he still deserves a spot on this list. The boxer’s career lasted from 1908-1926 and he was best known for his speed, power, and excellent boxing ability. His career record of 89-15-6 is outstanding, and included some incredible moments.

He won the Welterweight Championship of France and of Europe, the Middleweight Championship of Europe, the Light Heavyweight Championship of Europe, and the Heavyweight Championship of Europe. He defended the Heavyweight title once before winning the White Heavyweight Championship of the World shortly after. All of these bouts took place in just a three year span between 1911 and 1914, which is pretty astounding.

While his boxing career was special, the other areas of Carpentier’s life were special as well. He took a short break from boxing in 1914 and was a French Air Force aviator. During that time he was awarded the two highest French military honours that exist. When he returned from service, his popularity skyrocketed, and he fought in the main event of boxing’s first million dollar gate.

Fabrice Tiozzo is a former professional boxer hailing from St. Denis, France. At the time of his retirement in July of 2006, Tiozzo held a pro record of 48-2. He was a world champion in two weight classes, as he held the WBC Light Heavyweight belt from 1995-1997, the WBA Cruiserweight belt from 1997 to 2000, and the WBA Light Heavyweight championship from 2004 to 2006.

Considered by many to be France’s greatest boxer, Marcel Cerdan was a World Middleweight Champion who amassed a 110-4 record during his 15-year professional run, with two of those losses coming by disqualification due to low blows. Like another on this list, Cerdan also fought for his country in the middle of his career, when he took up arms in World War II. He captured multiple titles during his career, starting with the French Welterweight title as well as the European Welterweight title.

After World War II, Cerdan moved up and captured the Middleweight Championship. Unfortunately, Cerdan was killed in a tragic plane crash in 1949.

Kickboxing Stars

Born in the north of France, Jérôme Le Banner competed in boxing and MMA, but where most of his success came was in the world of kickboxing. Le Banner racked up a professional record of 86-22-2 over the course of his career. He saw great success in K-1 where he won two grand prixs and competed in the finals of four more. In the International Sport Karate Association Le Banner won eight championships between 1992 and 2015.

Cédric Doumbé is a former professional kickboxer who was just signed to the UFC this summer. During his kickboxing career, he was a two time Glory Welterweight Champion with five title defences, a World Kickboxing Association European and World Champion, as well as a K-1 and A1 Champion. In the kickboxing world, Doumbé finished with a record of 75-7, and now he turns his sights on to the UFC. Despite only having two professional MMA bouts, he is a highly-touted prospect who generated quite the buzz when he was signed. Both his MMA bouts are victories coming by way of TKO.

Doumbé was supposed to debut on this weekend’s card but unfortunately his fight was cancelled by the commission due to a differential in the number of bouts between fighters being too high to bypass the French commission’s rules. As a pro MMA fighter, Doumbe has earned 5 KOS in 6 of his pro fights. The last spot on our list of the best MMA fighters from France goes to the rising PFL star in Cedric Doumbe.

Current MMA Fighters

Ciryl Gane

One of the best MMA fighters from France today is UFC heavyweight contender Ciryl Gane. Of course Gane had to be on this list. Not only is the former UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion headlining the UFC’s first card in France, but he could be the most talented French MMA fighter ever.

His combination of speed, technical ability, and decision-making has propelled his professional record to 10-1, with his only loss coming to the champion Francis Ngannou. With a win over Tuivasa, Gane would be 8-1 in the UFC and is definitely a name that the UFC could use to propel the French market. As well, should something happen to Ngannou’s title, Gane could easily be slotted into a vacant title fight sometime soon.

Hailing from La Roche-sur-Yon, France, former heavyweight interim champion Ciryl Gane has burst onto the MMA scene. After achieving a 13-0 record in his first martial art of Muay Thai, the Frenchman looked to put his elite striking skills to use in MMA. It took only 3 fights in the Canadian circuit for Gane to be scouted to fight for the UFC.

The fleet-footed Frenchman used his impressive speed and footwork to expand his 3-0 record to 9-0 within the promotion, taking out the likes of Junior dos Santos, Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Alexander Volkov. The fight was a one-sided masterclass with Ciryl Gane taking the lead easily against his slower, albeit more powerful foe. Using his snapping jab, whip-like body kicks, and evasive movement, ‘Bon Gamin’ was able to get a 3rd round TKO victory in Lewis’s hometown of Houston.

Fuelled initially by the teammate vs teammate match-up, the lead-up for Gane vs Ngannou was a classy affair. The fight itself defied expectation, as despite his dominance on the feet the Frenchman was outwrestled by Ngannou. Ciryl would go on to lose the fight and Francis Ngannoumedov would keep his title.

Gane faced Serghei Spivac on September 2, 2023, at UFC Fight Night 226. He won the fight via TKO in the second round. Gane competed for the heavyweight championship for the third time against current champion Tom Aspinall on October 25, 2025 at UFC 321. During a competitive first round with both men exchanging, Gane extended his hand poking Aspinall in both eyes.

Ciryl Gane stars as Bastien in the movie KO. He is also in the 2025 film, "Den of Thieves 2" starring O'Shea Jackson Jr.

Manon Fiorot

Manon Fiorot has made a name for herself amongst French fighters. French Flyweight striker, Manon Fiorot has been an electric addition to the UFC’s female roster. Coming from Nice, France, Fiorot started her martial arts journey in karate at age 7, earning her blackbelt at 18.

Suffering a loss in her first MMA outing, Manon Fiorot has been a force to be reckoned with ever since. The French finisher has 6 KO/TKO victories out of her 9 wins. Her most notable win so far has been Jennifer Maia, and the French standout has been pegged as the division’s top prospect.

Fiorot stormed onto the scene in early 2021, racking up four straight wins with two knockouts in just 14 months, which included a dominant win over former title challenger Jennifer Maia. Fiorot has an extensive amateur background in multiple disciplines and currently holds just one pro MMA loss which came in her debut.

Currently scheduled to face Katlyn Chookagian on October’s ridiculously stacked pay-per-view, Manon could be just one or two wins away from fighting for a title against the human-buzzsaw Valentina Shevchenko.

Born in Nice, France, Fiorot had her professional debut on June 16, 2018, where she lost to Leah McCourt. Since then, she has gone unbeaten in 12 fights, with six wins by knockout.

Nassourdine Imavov

Originally born in Dagestan, Russia, Nassourdine Imavov moved to Paris when he turned 19 years old and started training at the MMA Factory. Though originally from Dagestan Russia, Nassourdine Imavov has lived in Paris, France since childhood.

Still living and training within the ‘city of love’ Imavov has set himself aside as a top French prospect. With a record of 11-3, Imavov has looked impressive within the UFC. ‘The Russian Sniper’ has fast accurate hands, making him an exciting addition to the UFC’s middleweight top 15.

Imavov has come into his own lately in the UFC’s Middleweight division, scoring massive victories over the likes of Edmen Shahbazyan, Ian Heinisch, and Jordan Williams, only faltering once to Phil Hawes. Imavov currently stands at the number 12 ranking in the division and is set to face the always-exciting Joaquin Buckley on the preliminary card of this weekend’s Paris card. If Imavov can get the win this weekend in front of a home crowd, his star will rise considerably.

Imavov steps into the co-main event spotlight this weekend against Brendan Allen on a two fight win streak. Imavov is coming off his first UFC main event where he stopped former middleweight title challenger Jared Cannonier.

Cheick Kongo

A list of the best MMA fighters from France without mentioning one of the early big stars in Cheick Kongo. Still competing at 46 years old, one cannot mention French MMA without highlighting this man’s career. Born in Paris, France, Cheick Kongo is a professional mixed martial artist who holds a pro record of 31-13-2.

Hailing from Paris, France of Burkinabe-Congolese heritage, Kongo has gained fame for his career in the UFC and superhero-esque body. Currently sitting at #2 in the Bellator heavyweight rankings, the 46-year-old is facing off against the champ Ryan Bader in a rematch at Bellator 280. The first ended in a disappointing NC due to an accidental eye poke.

The 6’4 Heavyweight fought the best of the best during his time in both Bellator and the UFC, holding wins over names like Mirko ‘Cro Cop’, Pat Barry, Alexander Volkov, and Matt Mitrione. He also competed against Frank Mir, Mark Hunt, Roy Nelson, Cain Velasquez, and Ryan Bader.

Kongo’s most iconic moment in fighting had to be his exciting bout with Pat Barry. On the brink of being knocked out, Cheick somehow came from behind and finished Barry. Then after his run in the UFC, Cheick went to Bellator where he won the S9 heavyweight tourney.

Benoit Saint Denis

Next on our list of the best MMA fighters from France is UFC lightweight contender Benoit Saint Denis. Saint Denis first stepped into the Octagon against Elizeu Zaleski Dos Santos at UFC 267. He lost a three round unanimous decision but after that he went on to win five in a row.

After losing his UFC debut, Benoit went on a tear, finishing five straight opponents in devastating fashion. Earlier this year in Miami, Saint Denis went toe-to-toe with Dustin Poirier, where he got finished in the second round. The match between Poirier and Denis at UFC 299 earned FOTY honors and was one of the year’s best fights.

Other Notable Fighters

Hailing from France, Fares Ziam is 2-2 in the UFC but has faced good competition in his short stint with the company. He lost to Terrance McKinney his last time out which is a fair loss given McKinney’s apparent upside, but holds wins over Jamie Mullarkey as well as Luigi Vendramini. Ziam still has a lot of upside as he is only 25 years of age, and has really been thrown into the deep-end of the Lightweight division of the UFC.

He is currently set to face a debuting Michael Figlak on the UFC Fight Night: Gane vs. Tuivasa. The lightweight made his first walk to the Octagon on September 7, 2019, where he fell to Don Madge by unanimous decision. Since then, Ziam has gone 5-1, only losing to Terrance McKinney by submission.

Taylor Lapilus was born in Paris, France. He returned last year, during UFC's second event in Paris and earned a victory by unanimous decision over Caolan Loughran. Since then, he has gone 1-1, losing to Farid Basharat and defeating Cody Stamann.

He made his debut last year in Paris and did not disappoint, earning a first round knockout. He has secured wins over Jarno Errens, Francis Marshall and Yanis Ghemmouri. In his UFC debut, Jousset earned a first round submission and then went on to secure a unanimous decision victory over Song Kenan three months later. He holds a record of 10-2, with four wins by knockout and one by submission. The 28-year-old from Paris, France holds a record of 10-0, with four wins by knockout and four by submission. The 34-year-old bantamweight went on to stop Melissa Mullins in the second round during her last fight in April. She has a record of 8-1, with six wins by knockout and one by submission.

Francis Ngannou

Heavyweight champ Francis Ngannou has lived a movie worthy life. Though not from France originally, it was within this country he would have his first taste of success. People questioned Ngannou’s decision to drop the heavyweight title and leave, but the move has more than paid off.

After evading the law and surviving the horrendous journey to France, Ngannou found himself on the street of Paris. Aspiring to be a boxer, Francis joined a local gym; it was here that his coaches introduced him to MMA. The allure of fast money grasped the then homeless Francis Ngannou to pursue a career in MMA, compiling a 5-1 record before being scouted by the UFC.

Knocking out everyone who dared sign the contract to fight ‘The Predator’, Francis met his first big name when he stood opposite the Dutch legend, Alistair Overeem. Whom he sent to the shadow realm with a thunderous uppercut. The noteworthy finish leads to a title shot against Ohio’s own, Stipe Miocic.

Much like his life before the UFC, Ngannou faced the lowest of lows. Miocic was able to drag Ngannou into the depths of exhaustion, putting on a grueling performance to halt the rise of the heavy-handed challenger. Francis looked to be beaten by his own mind, stemming from his arduous defeat to Miocic. However, the soon-to-be champ wasn’t finished, cutting through elite competition with ruthless efficiency.

Earning the right to rematch heavyweight GOAT Stipe Miocic in 2021. The fight was drastically different with both men having success on the feet, however, it was Ngannou’s improved wrestling that was the story of the night. With this weapon taken from Stipe, he was left striking with the division’s most prolific knockout artist. His recent success against the aforementioned Ciryl Gane and his proposed venture into the square circle against ‘The Gypsy King’ Tyson Fury, has brought Ngannou into a new stage of his career.

Cyrille Diabaté - French Kickboxer and MMA fighter. Complied an impressive 41-8-2 record in kickboxing.

Tom ‘Fire Kid’ Duquesnoy - Former French prospect Tom Duquesnoy is currently retired with a record of 16-2.

January 1, 2020, a historic month for French MMA fighters and combat sports fans alike. On this day, the French government made its long-awaited decision to legalize MMA events within the country. As stated above, France has given some great contributions to the sport of MMA, despite it being illegal within the country.

Forced to seek out opportunities on foreign soil, French MMA fighters have called many big promotions home. No longer will young homegrown talent be cast away in search of competition in foreign lands, this should allow French MMA fighters to prosper within their country without constantly having to travel to other countries to compete.
