Early Years and High School Success

After moving to Wisconsin as a baby, Gavin Nelson built an impressive youth wrestling record, training rigorously. Recognizing his potential, Nelson and his family moved back to Minnesota when he entered junior high to further his wrestling aspirations. His introduction to the Simley wrestling room was a trial by fire, facing off against varsity wrestlers as a 7th grader.

Nelson quickly adapted, becoming a standout athlete at Simley High School. He achieved the title of a three-time state champion and a five-time state placewinner. According to TheGuillotine, he was ranked as the second-best pound-for-pound wrestler in Minnesota and the top wrestler in his class at 220 lbs. He also earned the No. 23 spot on MatScouts’ Class of 2023 Big Board.

Everything about Gavin Nelson screams tough, physical and relentless. The 210-pound senior is one of the top high school wrestling recruits in the nation. He’s built strong and sturdy - as can be said for most Simley High School wrestlers.

That sentiment holds up when you give him the ball on the football field, as well. Tackling the rugged running back is nearly as difficult as taking him down on the mat.

How would Spartans coach Chris Mensen describe him on the field?

“Bruising. Absolutely bruising,” he said. “He punishes defenses who try to tackle him one on one.”

Commitment to the University of Minnesota

Gavin Nelson's decision to commit to the University of Minnesota was a significant milestone in his career. He is currently a freshman at 6-4 and 197 pounds. Nelson is part of a promising group of newcomers to the Minnesota wrestling team for the 2023-24 season.

Nelson is currently the #4 recruit in the class of 2023. His commitment to Minnesota is remarkable by itself, but it's even more impressive considering the recent commitment of Cody Chittum, the top recruit in the class of 2023. The Chittum, Nelson combo puts the Gophers in the early running for the top recruiting class in 2023 alongside Illinois who has received commitments from #2 Christian Carroll and #21 Kannon Webster. This is on the heels of the Gophers hauling in the #7 ranked class in 2021.
