Lutheran West High School initiated its wrestling program during the 1967-68 school year, marking the beginning of a rich athletic tradition. The inaugural season involved afternoon practices held in the school gym, setting the stage for interscholastic competition in the subsequent year. Leading this new endeavor was Coach Nick Matthews, who dedicated the first five years to building the foundation of the wrestling team.
The yearbook from that time captured the essence of the program, noting, "Wrestling has become a challenge for the guys, giving opportunity to use mind and muscle." This sentiment reflects the dual emphasis on physical and mental strength that has characterized the Lutheran West wrestling program since its inception.

Early Growth and First Victories
The team experienced rapid growth, expanding to 14 wrestlers in its second season. By the 1969-70 season, the roster had further increased to 20 wrestlers, allowing the team to compete in seven matches. To support this growth, new mats were purchased, although many practices were still held in the hallway outside the gym.
The 1970-71 season was particularly notable, with the team reaching 26 wrestlers. During this season, Wally Senney achieved a significant milestone by recording the first home win in school history. Additionally, the team secured its first dual meet victory with a triumph over Cleveland Central Catholic.

First District Qualifiers
Dave Wise (145) made history in the Oberlin Sectional Tournament of 1972 by becoming the first Longhorn wrestler to qualify for the district tournament. Wise placed 6th at sectionals, earning the distinction of a district alternate. The following week, at the Nordonia District, Wise competed as an alternate, achieving a 1-1 record in the tournament. His defeat came against Ralph Graham of Kenston, who would later become the state champion.
In the 1972-73 season, under the guidance of new head coach Geoffrey Eckrich, the team started strong with a 45-25 victory over Lutheran East. Coach Eckrich would lead the team for four years. Bill Parobek (Hvy) became the first Longhorn wrestler to qualify outright for the district tournament in 1974. In 1975, Mark Hosko finished in 4th place at the Cuyahoga Hts Sectional at 185lbs, securing his spot in the district tournament.
Continued Success and Coaching Changes
In the 1976-77 season, Coach Gary Fitzler inspired the team to a 4-5 record, with senior Mark Novak qualifying for the district tournament at 138lbs. The 1978 season saw two district qualifiers, Paul Moses (145) and Roland Sundermann (175), under the leadership of new head coach Dave Kemp.
The 1978-79 season brought yet another coaching change, with Dave Wolter taking the helm. Coach Wolter led the team to its first winning season with a 7-3 record. He remained head coach for three seasons, compiling a 16-10 dual meet record. Under his guidance, Lutheran West qualified three wrestlers for the 1979 district tournament, with John Berghaus (185) becoming the school's first district placer (4th).
