Montana Wrestling: Results and Highlights from Recent Tournaments

The Montana wrestling season is in full swing, with several exciting tournaments already completed. Here's a look at some of the top results and highlights.

C.M. Russell High Holiday Classic

Four Electric City grapplers took home top honors at the first major tournament of the wrestling season at the C.M. Russell High Holiday Classic. The tournament was held Saturday, Dec. 20, at CMR Fieldhouse.

Three Rustlers took home gold at the home meet featuring boys’ and girls’ teams from all levels across Montana, while Great Falls High had one.

Top Performers:

  • State champion Madalyn Deiter repeated as a Holiday champ for the CMR girls.
  • Two-time titlist Cael Floerchinger topped the podium for the Bison.
  • State placers Paydon De La Garza and Teagan Dixon of CMR were likewise the tops in their respective brackets.

The CMR boys finished fourth as a team, while Billings West ran away with the meet title with 331.5 points to second place Bozeman Gallatin’s 194.5.

Individual Match Highlights

After a pair of pins and two technical falls to reach the title round, De La Garza took down Class B-C state champ Anson Taylor of Circle in the waning moments of the opening period and secured the fall to win at 118 pounds. De La Garza is a two-time state placer and made the finals at the Holiday for the second time in his career Saturday.

De La Garza was ranked No. 4 in the latest Class AA polls at 118 at the beginning of the week.

The Holiday win for Floerchinger was the third of his career as he’s looking to build off back-to-back state championships in his freshman and sophomore seasons. The junior dispatched with Aiden Sweat of Glacier - the No. 2 grappler at 126 in AA behind Floerchinger - by technical fall at 17-2 with 28 seconds left in the second frame.

Floerchinger was ranked nationally by FloWrestling in his class at No. 14 coming into the year and he placed in the top eight at the prestigious Super 32 in North Carolina in the fall.

The junior Deiter took her second straight Holiday tourney as she works toward repeating at 125 for the Rustlers in February.

Deiter secured three straight pins to earn her way into the semis Saturday before picking up a 16-1 tech fall over Araeya Nelson of Billings West. In the finals, Deiter bested Rebel Montanez of Frenchtown by an 18-0 technical fall stoppage in the second round.

Dixon, a junior who placed third at state last season, picked up two tech falls and a pin on his way to the Holiday semis Saturday, where he earned a late takedown to best Sloan Giles of Fairfield 11-9.

Ranked fifth in the Class AA polls at 157, Dixon gutted out a 4-2 decision victory in the finals over ranked opponent Korbyn Barent of Billings West.

The Rustlers had a pair of athletes finish in the top three as Madden Jensen was third at 150 and Gage Allen took bronze at 190. Also placing for Great Falls High was Adrian Lara in third at 118 and Kolby Noble, who earned fifth at 215.
