While UFC fighters are known for their prowess in the octagon, recent incidents highlight that they are not immune to real-world dangers like robbery and mugging. These encounters underscore the importance of self-defense training and awareness, even for professional fighters.
Justin's Story: Training Prevails Over Brawn
One such incident involved a mixed martial arts expert named Justin from Des Plaines. Standing at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 250 pounds, Justin found himself facing an alleged mugger with a loaded pistol. According to Justin, it was his training, not his size, that allowed him to disarm the assailant.
Justin recounted that the mugger, Anthony Miranda, initially asked for a light for a cigarette. When Justin replied that he didn't smoke, Miranda pulled out a gun and demanded Justin's wallet, phone, and keys. Justin handed over the $30 in cash he had, but Miranda was not satisfied.
“At that moment, he backs up the gun and he racks it,” Justin recalled. “The gun jammed. He racked it a second time. He ejected the bullet on the ground. He went down and grabbed the bullet and said, ‘Look, m--f--, it’s a hollow point. I’ll blow your brains out.’”
Justin said he looked at the man facing him, pistol pointing at his chest, and was pretty certain he was about to take a bullet.

“I wasn’t scared because I’m trained,” Justin explained.
Justin then demonstrated to a reporter the sudden, rather effective maneuver that disarmed his attacker.
During the struggle, the gun went off, and Justin managed to subdue Miranda until the police arrived. Miranda, a 24-year-old felon, was later charged with armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm.
When asked about his training, Justin offered only vague hints: “Former military,” “high-risk training,” “Hostage rescue.” He emphasized, “Training matters. If you’re well trained, you have a chance to survive.”
Anthony Miranda’s bruised and battered face - and Justin’s unblemished, chiseled one - leaves no doubt about who came out the victor in the encounter.

Yadong Song: Surrendering to Save Lives
How Bank Robberies Actually Work | How Crime Works | Insider
In another incident, UFC fighter Yadong Song and his companion, actress Nan Lin, were targeted by four men while Song was buying water at a gas station. Lin told NBC Bay Area that the men all had ski masks on.
Lin told NBC Bay Area that he had just purchased a bottle of water when he turned around and saw one of the young men with a gun pointed right in his face. “He took my chain, one of my rings, everything in my pockets and once he got ahold of my car keys, he unlocked the car," he said.
Despite being a professional fighter, Yadong chose to surrender. “Even though I am a professional fighter, I chose to surrender,” Yadong said. “Because I knew that facing their guns, my fists couldn’t compete. I couldn’t be faster than a bullet." At some point during the mugging, KRON-4 reported, one of the thieves struck Lin in the neck with the butt of his pistol. Yadong was uninjured.
“I want to tell you that no matter what, no matter how strong we are, we can all encounter danger and feel helpless,” he said.
Marcio Tulio & Norma Dumont: A Failed Robbery Attempt

“We’re heading to Saturday’s fight in Miami with 'Matuto',” Dumon said in Portuguese. “It was chill…They tried to rob him, grab his phone, smashed the window. But look, did they get it?”
“Nope, they didn’t get it, see,” Tulio said. “Their plan failed…Now, the urge to fight someone is even stronger…Someone’s going to pay for this.”
The Broader Implications
These incidents serve as a reminder that even individuals trained in combat are vulnerable to crime. They also highlight the importance of being aware of one's surroundings and making informed decisions in dangerous situations. While self-defense training can be invaluable, sometimes the best course of action is to comply with demands to ensure personal safety.
The experiences of these UFC fighters also shed light on the broader issue of crime in certain areas. As Nan Lin, Yadong Song's companion, noted, "I kind of grew up in the Bay Area. Always loved the Bay Area. Now, if there’s not a reason to go to the Bay Area, I wouldn’t and I think that’s just sad."
