The Phenomenal Rise of Wonder Woman in Wrestling History

The world of wrestling has seen a significant rise in the prominence and recognition of female athletes. From championship titles to dedicated tournaments and foundations, women's wrestling is making its mark. This article delves into the captivating history of Wonder Woman's influence in wrestling, highlighting key achievements, tournaments, and the empowering initiatives that support female wrestlers.

Ultimate Destiny Wrestling (UDW) World Women's Championship

Ultimate Destiny Wrestling (UDW) has a rich history of showcasing female talent, with the UDW World Women's Championship serving as a prestigious title. Established in 2013, the championship has seen numerous wrestlers vie for the coveted title.

The UDW Women's Championship was introduced in March 2013 as the UDW Divas Championship when Wonder Woman was announced as the inaugural champion. In 2014, a second brand for women was introduced. The championship was announced as a world title and became the primary championship of the new brand.

At Gotham Nights II, a Money in the Bank match was held with a contract for the World Women's Championship, which was won by Tina Armstrong. On January 14, 2015, she would cash in the contract to become champion. This tradition would continue next year, with Regina winning the contract and later becoming champion. Wonder Woman would become the first person to cash in a contract and fail, as she used Money in the Bank to interject herself into a triple threat match with Ms. She-Ra, the current champion.

There have been twenty-two champions between sixty-nine individual reigns. Power Girl, She-Hulk and Wonder Woman have the most reigns at seven a piece, and Cutie Honey has the longest reign at 214 days. The shortest reigning champion was Elsa, who held the title for 10 days from September 12 to 22, 2024.

The Wonder Women of Wrestling Foundation

The Wonder Women of Wrestling Foundation is dedicated to supporting female wrestlers through scholarships and opportunities.

I am Mike Wakim Jr., the proud founder of The Wonder Women Girl’s Wrestling Tournament, established in 2018 during the inaugural season of sanctioned girls’ wrestling by the Missouri State High School Activities Association. Since our inception, The Wonder Women Tournament has evolved into a powerhouse event, reflecting the growth and passion for girls’ wrestling. In the winter of 2023, we took a transformative step forward by transitioning into a non-profit entity known as The Wonder Women of Wrestling Foundation.

A cornerstone of our foundation is the essay contest, which provides senior wrestlers competing in the Wonder Women Tournament the opportunity to earn scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $4,000. In the spring of 2023, we proudly awarded our first three $1,000 scholarships to three exceptional young women, recognizing their dedication, resilience, and academic achievements. By 2024, we expanded to award four $1,000 scholarships. Additionally, we are proud to share that, with this year’s awards, we will have granted a total of $20,000 in scholarships.

In the fall of 2024, we proudly partnered with e.l.f. Cosmetics as our presenting sponsor, marking a pivotal moment for the Wonder Women Wrestling Tournament. This collaboration elevated the tournament to new heights, both on and off the mat. Together, we forge ahead, championing the spirit of Wonder Woman wrestling and fostering an environment where excellence is not only recognized but also nurtured. Our mission is clear and resolute. We are dedicated to maintaining The Wonder Women Tournament as an unparalleled stage for these young women to compete against the best in the nation.

As the President of our foundation, I am honored to introduce the dedicated individuals who form the backbone of our team. Lee Furnace Jr., our Vice President, spearheads our scholarship opportunities and brings a wealth of experience to our cause. Taking charge as our Logistics Director is Chris Kyle. Chris joined us in 2022 after a successful coaching career. His contagious enthusiasm for the tournament and unwavering love for the sport aligns seamlessly with our mission. Serving as the Team Management Director is Jake Lapinski, a trusted ally with whom I’ve shared coaching experiences for years.
