Early Success and Milestone Achievement

Despite an early setback in a match against Avonworth, Antonio Boni achieved a significant milestone by capturing his 100th win. Boni said, “It was a bittersweet moment that we weren’t able to win the pigtail match but it was a great experience getting my 100th win. Getting your hand raised and seeing all of your teammates and everyone in the stands cheering you on and getting to hold the 100 wins sign meant a lot to me.”

In Boni’s first two seasons, he was one of the top wrestlers in the Warriors program racked up 71 wins while dropping just 11 matches. In his junior season, he continued to improve dropping just two matches before picking up his 100th win.

According to Boni, “I think that I have matured since my freshman season. I have just been focusing on getting better at things outside of wrestling like academics and being a good person because that will help me with everything else.”

Leadership and Team Impact

Central Valley head coach Anthony Duffield said, “Antonio is one of those kids you want on your team. Not only is he great on the mat, he has a great GPA and wants to attend Bucknell to study business and wrestle at the collegiate level. He is an exceptional student-athlete and we are lucky to have him."

Boni has stepped into a leadership role being one of the team’s top wrestlers with a young roster that features just one senior. Duffield said “Before the season started I took him [Antonio] and the other captain Liam McKittrick aside and when I named them captains, I think they were surprised. But I chose them both because of the work ethic that they have and they have the presence of natural leaders. Kids flock to Antonio. When we go to tournaments kids, referees and coaches all come up to him and know who he is. That is the type of person that you want as a leader”

WPIAL Championships

Heading into the WPIAL Class 2A wrestling individual championships, Antonio Boni aimed to become a three-time WPIAL champion. Boni achieved that goal Saturday afternoon at Chartiers Valley High School, picking up a pin in the second period against his opponent. “It feels great to capture a WPIAL title three times in a row,” Boni said.

Boni controlled the championship match from the jump as he scored a takedown with under 30 seconds to go in the first period. After an escape early in the second, Boni capitalized on three takedowns in the period and finished off the match with the pin. The junior 127-pounder knew that if he continued to pressure his opponent, the match would go his way. “If I could continue to pressure my opponent, the match will go my way,” Boni said. “If I can continue to wrestle how I have, I have the confidence to win moving forward."

Boni's quarterfinal victory over Northwest region champion Logan Stewart (Reynolds) was considered among the more notable results of Friday's morning session. Boni built a 5-0 lead early in the match before hanging on.

"(Boni) is just gritty. We needed that win for a confidence booster because we're always right here," Duffield said. "This is a great run for him and I'm excited."Boni then disposed of Wagner, the Northeast regional champ, by building another early lead.
