Essential Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Techniques and Training Insights

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that focuses on grappling and ground fighting as self-defense. In recent times however, technical innovations exclusive to Brazilian jiu jitsu have emerged. BJJ is a tool to create confidence, discipline, and better perspectives in school, work, and life. Jiu-Jitsu training and exercise promote a healthy lifestyle rooted in physical fitness and mental health. At Double Five Jiu-Jitsu, we are passionate about sharing the gift of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with our community.

It should be noted that Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) does not have an established canon (formalized set of techniques), with significant regional variation seen in both application and naming. Due to its status as an eclectic martial art, much controversy surrounds the renaming of techniques derived from other martial arts. Many of these martial arts including Brazilian jiu jitsu's parent art of judo, was itself a collection of adopted techniques from other older forms of martial arts before developing unique techniques. Unlike its direct predecessor judo, which categorizes techniques on the basis of mechanism, Brazilian jiu jitsu techniques are frequently eponyms, which leads to confusion among practitioners.

At Double Five Jiu-Jitsu Chicago, we know the importance of a healthy mind and body. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training improves both physical fitness and mental well-being. In BJJ, you’ll burn hundreds of calories in each class, develop lean muscles, and boost stamina and endurance. BJJ at Double Five Jiu-Jitsu Chicago puts you in an atmosphere where you can succeed with any sized opponent, gain self-esteem and confidence in your skills, and learn to never give up and raise your endurance.

Let’s take a look at some essential Jiu-Jitsu techniques and training methods.

Essential BJJ Stretches

When training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Few can argue that becoming better at Jiu-Jitsu competition requires a number of things. However, if you aren’t flexible, and you can’t get your arms and legs to where you need them, it won’t matter how many techniques you know because you won’t be able to use them. Let’s take a look at five Jiu-Jitsu stretches that you should start working on.

  1. Butterfly Stretch: The butterfly stretch is one of the fundamental Jiu-Jitsu stretches that can be learned and mastered by anyone. Basically, start by sitting down on your buttocks and touch both knees to the ground while your feet are touching.
  2. Single Lotus Stretch: The single lotus stretch is recommended for succeeding in Jiu-Jitsu competition as it will allow you to perform more intricate techniques including the rubber guard as well as the butterfly guard without any pain or discomfort. This stretch is important as it ultimately sets up you for the later, more difficult ones.
  3. Double Lotus Stretch: This is where things start to become a little difficult. It is basically the same thing as the single lotus with the only exception being that you are using both of your feet to stretch rather than one.
  4. Bending Double Lotus: Once you have successfully performed the double lotus, you’ll want to start bending your upper body forward slightly. This is going to automatically start increasing the pressure on your knees and hips. This stretch hurts, but if you plan on excelling at Jiu-Jitsu competition, you need to master it.
  5. Full Extension: To perform a full extension, start in the double lotus position and then touch your head and forearms to the ground in front of you. Similar to the previous stretches, you will start to feel a great deal of pain and pressure around your knees and hips- especially in the beginning.

BJJ Techniques for Beginners

What’s the most common problem (aside from getting caught under side control) facing the BJJ beginner? There are a thousand variations of sweeps and locks and chokes and pins and escapes and guard passes. So where then do you start? Which techniques should you concentrate on to get as good as possible as FAST as possible? “Escapes, posture and defence are all fine. But just as important, is figuring out which techniques to avoid when you’re a beginner. There are many advanced techniques useful for very specific situations. If you become a trend chaser and start try to master every latest-and-greatest berimbolo variation that shows up at the BJJ Mundials then you’re probably not going to build a very strong foundation for your game.

Here are some BJJ techniques for beginners:

  1. Hip Escape from Mount: It is critical to learn to utilize the power of your hips and explosive bridge to escape the mount. Pushing with the arms is a habit that new students must abandon as soon as possible when learning BJJ.
  2. Replacing Guard: Replacing guard is your number one priority when your opponent has passed your guard. You have to learn to move your hips on the bottom for all escapes and this is the first one you should learn.
  3. Triangle Choke: The triangle choke is one of the signature submissions in BJJ. The triangle choke teaches you how to use your legs to attack and choke your opponent. The triangle choke is very versatile and can be setup many different ways from the different guards.
  4. Armbar from Guard: Interestingly when new students roll against a more experienced female BJJ practitioner, the most common surprise the new student gets is tapping out due to an armbar from her guard! If you’re going to be dangerous off your back then you NEED to get good at the armbar from guard!
  5. Basic Collar and Sleeve Grip: The basic collar and sleeve grip is how you base your closed guard strategy. It is the starting point for all of your other guard attack combinations, including the previous 2 techniques.
  6. Armbar from Mount: This is the best submission from the dominant mount position. This submission from mount works in both gi and no-gi.
  7. Americana from Side Control: Side control is a great control position where you utilize your weight to control a struggling opponent. The Americana will teach you the BJJ principle of using 2 limbs of yours against your opponent’s single limb.
  8. Rear Naked Choke: The rear naked choke or “mata leon / lion killer” is the best technique to employ against larger, stronger opponents and especially in a self defence situation.
  9. Over-Under Pass: This is a great guard pass to learn about properly using your bodyweight to create pressure during the guard pass. The over-under pass relies on a low posture to prevent your opponent’s attacks, including most chokes, armlocks, and sweeps!
  10. Guillotine: The guillotine has been called the grappling equivalent of the “knockout punch”.
  11. Double Leg Takedown: Taking a deep step forward to close the distance between you and the opponent. Following through by either lifting, driving, or turning the corner.

5 Self-Defense Techniques in BJJ

Everyone has their own opinion on self-defense, meaning which style of martial arts is the best for self-defense. I challenge you to find what works for you and train it. We owe it to ourselves to have knowledge in defending our own lives and the people we love and care for. I am going to specifically discuss techniques pertaining to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. First and foremost, I have personally dabbled in many different styles of martial arts over the years, however, I keep reverting back to my choice for self-defense as being Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Let’s get started, the following “5” techniques I can see being utilized by an absolute beginner or someone wanting to have some working knowledge of ground fighting or of a way to defend yourself. If you were to find a legitimate BJJ academy anywhere in this world, I’d find it hard to believe that you wouldn’t learn these techniques within the first few classes, with the one exception being a takedown (I’ll explain the takedown later).

  1. Closed Guard: There are many types of guards, but we’ll discuss the closed guard as being a technique utilized by newer grapplers and the benefits of utilizing it during a self-defense scenario. The guard is basically the way you utilize your legs in regards to your adversary, whether you wrap your legs around your adversary while laying on your back or you utilize your legs to keep your adversary away from you while you are on your back.
  2. Scissor Sweep: The scissor sweep is a simple sweep that easily compliments the guard. Basically, I rank this high on the self-defense list due to the fact that if you’re on your back and needing to get your adversary off of you, you can use this technique and easily move your adversary or create a little extra space if you’re being crowded. A properly executed scissor sweep can cause you to completely change positions.
  3. Knee on Belly: The Knee on Belly is essential in controlling your adversary when you are in a top position, it allows you to easily move on top of your adversary or simply disengage, if that is warranted.
  4. Cross-Face: The cross-face is a position where you are on top of your adversary and you are looking to control them. You simply take your arm and go behind their head and put your shoulder to the side of their jaw line. This type of pressure from this position will allow you to control and when done correctly you can have a free hand.
  5. Basic Foot Sweep: The reason behind this thought process is foot sweeps are simple and very effective when utilized properly. Also, for someone who does not train on a normal basis you can work on the mechanics of foot sweep very easily by yourself or with a partner for a few minutes as needed for learning the timing aspect of the foot sweep.

Improving Your BJJ Skills

When it comes to mastering the art of grappling, understanding and executing various drills and strategies is crucial. This blog section will delve into five key aspects that are essential for improving your skills in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

  1. Defending Against Bull Fighting Guard Pass: One of the most common guard-passing techniques in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the bull fighting guard pass. This maneuver involves the passer attempting to move around the legs of the guard player by creating space and applying pressure. To effectively defend against this pass, specific drills can be practiced. Practice creating frames with your arms and legs to create barriers for your opponent's advancements. Focus on hip movement and maintaining proper distance to prevent the bull fight pass.
  2. Mastering the Clock Choke: The clock choke is a powerful submission that can apply immense pressure on your opponent's neck. This technique is highly effective when executed correctly and can lead to a swift victory. Mastering the clock choke requires precision and understanding of leverage. Start by securing your opponent's lapel with a deep grip, then swiftly transition to their back while maintaining control. Apply pressure by utilizing your forearm across their neck, mimicking the hands of a clock.
  3. Transitioning Between Positions: Transitioning between positions is a key aspect of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Knowing when and how to move from side control to mount, or vice versa, can dictate the flow of the match. Having a strategic approach to these transitions can give you the upper hand. Utilize underhooks and overhooks to secure control during transitions. Timing is crucial; wait for the right moment to make your move. Be aware of your opponent's reactions and adjust your strategy accordingly.
  4. Controlling Opponent's Limbs: Controlling your opponent's arms and legs is fundamental in dominating the grappling exchange. By restricting their movements and limiting their options, you can increase your chances of success in securing advantageous positions or submissions. Practice maintaining control over your opponent's limbs through grips and transitions. Work on breaking their posture and disrupting their base to gain the upper hand during the grappling exchange.
  5. Preventing Opponent from Facing You: Keeping your opponent from facing you is crucial to maintaining control and dictating the pace of the match. By understanding how to disrupt their movements and counter their attempts to reposition, you can stay one step ahead in the grappling game. Focus on off-balancing your opponent to prevent them from facing you directly. React swiftly to their movement patterns and anticipate their next actions. Utilize pressure and leverage to thwart their attempts to change positions.

By incorporating these drills and strategies into your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training regimen, you can enhance your skills, improve your overall performance, and elevate your proficiency on the mat. Remember, practice makes perfect, so dedicate time to honing these techniques and watch your grappling game soar to new heights.

Mastering Submission and Defense Techniques

As you delve deeper into the world of martial arts, mastering submission and defense techniques becomes essential for both self-improvement and self-defense. In this blog section, we will explore various techniques that will empower you to control your opponent, break free from their grip, apply effective joint locks, and ultimately adjust your strategies to counter your opponent's movements.

  1. Ankle Control in Foot-on-Hip Position: One of the fundamental techniques in submission and defense is gaining control over your opponent's ankle while in the foot-on-hip position. By leveraging this position effectively, you can disrupt your opponent's balance, limit their movement, and set yourself up for various submission opportunities.
  2. Belt Technique to Break Free from Grip: When your opponent manages to secure a tight grip, knowing how to break free is crucial. The belt technique offers a strategic way to release yourself from their hold, creating openings for counterattacks or transitioning into advantageous positions.
  3. Wrist Locks and Kimura Position Options: Mastering wrist locks and the kimura position provides you with versatile submission and control options. By applying proper technique and leverage, you can exert pressure on your opponent's joints, forcing them to submit or leading to a positional advantage.
  4. Effective Pressure Application During Submissions: Effective submission techniques rely not only on correct positioning but also on applying pressure in a controlled manner. Understanding how to generate and maintain pressure during submissions increases their effectiveness and reduces the likelihood of your opponent escaping.
  5. Adaptability in Dynamic Situations: Adaptability is key in martial arts, especially when facing dynamic opponents.
