Dr. Shrader
Come take a tour of Auckland Zoo's Vet Hospital!
Dr. Shrader is a Nebraska native, originally from the small town of Elmwood between Lincoln and Omaha. Some of his fondest memories of childhood are raising chickens and rabbits with his dad to show for 4-H at the county fair and giving book reports to his grandma so she could keep tabs on his reading skills. After attending Kansas State University for a bachelor’s degree and DVM from the College of Veterinary Medicine, he completed a specialty internship in zoo, exotics, and wildlife medicine at the University of Saskatchewan’s Western College of Veterinary Medicine. From there, he progressed to a specialty internship in zoological medicine and surgery at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium.

After practicing zoological medicine exclusively for 7 years, Dr. Shrader began to miss relationships with pets and their families and wanted to provide a level of post-doctoral zoo and exotic training to the Omaha community. While working part-time in a private practice, he met Dr. Lackovic and a shared vision for a veterinary clinic that provides exceptional medicine to every pet in the household was formed. Dr. Shrader currently splits his time 50% at Southpaw and spends the other 50% as the Assistant Clinical Professor of Zoo, Exotic, and Wildlife Medicine and Surgery at Kansas State University’s Veterinary Health Center. He is currently attaining additional qualifications in conservation medicine through a master’s degree program at the University of Edinburgh’s Royal School of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Shrader has experience and passion for emergency and critical care of your patients, and for providing extraordinary care for every pet in and around your household, including exotic companions, dogs, cats, agricultural species (including goats, pot-bellied pigs, camelids, backyard chickens, and ducks), and especially non-traditional pets like wallabies, sloths, armadillos, falconry birds, and many more.
