In 1993 he started his first photo shoot for a well known photographer like Herb Ritts and Bruce Weber and on the same year he became more popular when he was part of Ralph Lauren as a model of male sports wear. Undeterred, Beckford went on to major success with Polo Ralph Lauren, modelling for the brand for five years, while simultaneously featuring on the covers of all the major fashion magazines.

In 1995 his cross-racial aesthetic of Chinese eyes, high cheekbones, full lips and brown skin catapulted him into People magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People In The World. As a model he was recognized as “Man of the Year” in 1995 by VH1, a cable television music channel and was also one of the “50 Most Beautiful People in the World by Peoples magazine.

He was first seen on screen in Toni Braxton’s video of “Unbreak My Heart”. Apart from music videos, he appeared on television shows like “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Magic Hour, Keenan Ivory Wayans, Mad TV, Entertainment Tonight and VHI.

Beckford also dreams to pursue his acting career. He took acting classes to make himself competent on that field.

He once turned down a spot on the coveted Milan Fashion Week catwalk because he was the only black man invited to the event. “There are so many African-American and African men who are trying to get jobs, and they weren’t giving the jobs to them,” he said at the time. “I’m not the only brother out here trying to make it.

Breaking into Hollywood hasn’t been easy, however, for the handsome star who says his good looks are sometimes more of a hindrance than a help. “A bad day for me now is going on an audition and not getting the gig,” he says.

Beckford also co-hosted the modeling contest Make Me a Supermodel on the television channel Bravo with fellow supermodel Niki Taylor. The show chose Nicole Trunfio to join Beckford as a mentor to the model contestants for the show's second season.
