At Cumming Martial Arts, students receive a well-rounded martial arts education through comprehensive training in Karate and Kobudo. Experienced instructors guide students every step of the way, whether they are interested in mastering hand-to-hand combat or learning the art of traditional weaponry.
Karate: The Art of Empty Hands
As one of the most popular forms of martial arts, Karate translates to “empty hands.” This discipline involves balanced strikes targeting various parts of the body, including pressure points, without favoring any specific area. In our system, we also practice Western Boxing as an introduction to Striking.

Cummings Martial Arts: More Than Just Self-Defense
Cummings Martial Arts is based on four cornerstones: Respect, Bravery, Honor and Health. Our programs, our curriculum, and our teaching is based on these important values. We teach our students the importance of each, and how they apply not only to learning martial arts, but also to life itself. Other lessons include focus, coordination, discipline, self-respect, kindness and dedication as well as self-worth and self-confidence.
The Four Cornerstones:
- Respect
- Bravery
- Honor
- Health
Martial Arts vs. Team Sports: The Long-Term Benefits
While both teach important lessons about teamwork, discipline, and physical fitness, martial arts also offers additional, long-term benefits. Our curriculum also teaches self-confidence, self-defense, individual achievement, and offers year-round training. Equally important are the lessons of self-control, respect, honor and other life skills that extend well into college and beyond. Karate also helps with college applications.
Paul Kanerek, Chief of Staff for CollegeWise and SVP of the Princeton Review, agrees: “Martial Arts look great on a student’s college resume. Success in martial arts shows control and discipline, and earning a black belt shows a tremendous amount of dedication and commitment.
